13th December, 2011: I have now received permission to include reports from the Folkestone Observer on the blog. My thanks to Kent Libraries and to the Kent Messenger Group (the Observer merged with the Kentish Express in September 1870). A link to the K.M. Group will be found in the Links section.

This will mean that many cases will be reported twice, but hopefully with some more detail, and almost certainly there will be cases reported here that were not covered in the Chronicle. It makes perfect sense to me to include reports from all the local newspapers chronologically in order of publication, so, as the necessary permissions are granted, so those other publications will be included.

So far, all the contemporary newspaper reports have come from the Folkestone Chronicle, but even by the date we`re up to at present (1869) there were other newspapers being published in the town. By this time the town was also being served with the Folkestone Observer and the Folkestone Express.

Whereas I would have liked to - in an ideal world - keep the reports running chronologically, and to have had stories from these other two papers inserted already, the permissions I need to be able to do that are not yet in place. (I have 6 years or so of the Observer already transcribed and ready to be put here, for example).

To avoid readers having to go through a lot of older postings to find the updates, as and when there are new items on the blog I`ll make an update post - the next will be over the weekend, hopefully, when 1869`s Chronicle is finally ready to be viewed. When the time comes that reports from the other papers are ready to be posted they`ll be put in the correct date order amongst the posts.

As you would expect, there will be a lot of "repeat" type postings, but the way in which things are reported in different sources will also lead to more information becoming available. It is certainly also the case that there are stories that have appeared on the Observer which are not reported in the Chronicle and vice versa. We can only assume that the same will hold true for the other papers as and when they make it here.

Ann Gittens, of the Town of Folkestone, in the County of Kent, victualler, Neat Ladd, of the same place, victualler, and Jacob Boxer, of the same place, victualler, came before me, John Hague Esq., Mayor, and other, the Jurats of the said town, and acknowledged themselves indebted to our Sovereign Lord the King in the manner following (that is to say): the said Ann Gittens in ten pounds and both the aforesaid Neat Ladd and Jacob Boxer in five pounds apiece as sureties for the said Ann Gittens, to be levied on each and every of their goods and chattels, lands and tenements, to and for the only proper use and behove of our said Lord the King, his heirs and successors.

The condition of this recognisance is such that whereas the above bound Ann Gittens is by the above named Mayor and Jurats licensed and allowed to keep a common inn or victualling house wherein she now dwells commonly called or known by the sign of the Red Lyon in Folkestone aforesaid from the date hereof for one whole year next ensuing or until the next General Licensing of Victuallers of the said town and no longer, if the said Ann Gittens  shall keep the due assize of bread and beer and shall not suffer any unlawful game or games, drunkenness or any other disorder in his (sic) said house, yard, garden or backside, but shall and do in all things govern the said house in accordance with the laws of this Realm, that then this recognisance shall be void, otherwise remain in full force or virtue.

Local News

During the thunderstorm of last Friday night part of the roadway in Bayle Street, in front of the Clarence Inn, fell in, and it required three or four loads of ballast to fill it in. Yesterday it again fell in, and in excavating it was found that an outlet from Bayle Pond running there had become stopped, and in an overflow had washed away the soil from under the stones. It has now been made safe.
