More than £250 was given to the Folkestone lifeboat crew as a new restaurant set sail for business. The Mermaid, situated along Folkestone seafront, held its official opening and cash was raised from the sale of 80 pints of lager.

The Dungeness lifeboat crew turned up to help celebrate the occasion, and a raffle and buffet were also part of the opening on Saturday night.

Janet Wilson, co-manager of the Mermaid, said “It was a very successful evening; everyone enjoyed themselves and it was very well supported. We felt that by holding a charity evening it was a good marking point to start off with”.

Mrs. Wilson wanted to help the crew because of her family connection with lifeboats: her grandfather was a founder member of a crew in Cornwall.
